Es war einer der wenigen und seltenen Tage, an denen das Firmament nicht von schweren Wolken verdeckt war, die neue Schneefälle und häufig schwere Blizzards mit sich brachten. ... Seit einigen Wochen mussten sie weit wandern, um genug Nahrung zu finden. ... Er drehte sich wieder um und seufzte. Wie oft hatte Spock den Tricorder bereits aufgeladen, zehn- oder fünfzehnmal? Sicher hatte er in seiner üblichen effizienten Art jeden der seltenen sonnigen Tage dafür genutzt. Wie er auch in seiner üblichen effizienten Art das beschädigte Shuttle noch einigermaßen sicher auf diesen Planeten heruntergebracht und damit ihrer aller Leben gerettet hatte. Wie er es verstand, aus jedem Knochenrest noch ein nützliches Werkzeug, Messerspitzen oder andere Dinge herzustellen. ... Seit mehr als 120 Tagen waren sie bereits auf diesem Planeten. Gestrandet. Knapp dem Tod entkommen, als das Shuttle plötzlich Fehlfunktionen hatte und dieser Planet die einzige Möglichkeit war, Notzulanden. Niemand hatte sie bisher hier gefunden, seit 120 Tagen. Es gab nicht einmal Anzeichen dafür, dass man sie überhaupt suchte.

In the Shade is the third novel in the Sharing the Sunlight series, written by Jenna Sinclair. This novel can be understood and enjoyed by anyone who is not familiar with the series. Enough information about previous events is presented in the first few chapters for readers to easily catch up. (Note: Previous novels in the series are Sharing the Sunlight, available from Merry Men Press at www.merrymenpress.com, and Promises to Keep, available here. Short stories and novellas that take place between STS and PTK are compiled in Setting Course, available here.)

In the Shade follows the lives of James Kirk and Spock of Vulcan after the end of the Enterprise's five year mission. Spock has still not recovered the psychic powers he lost in Promises to Keep, although he and Kirk visit a Vulcan healer who might hold the key to his recovery. The two of them settle to their duties for Starfleet on Earth, and Kirk is promoted to commodore. In the wider world, political power is about to shift in a way unacceptable to some humans, and inevitable turmoil will result.

In the Shade is a very personal novel, an intense, intimate look into the lives of two extraordinary men and the events that threaten to tear them apart.

These files can be read by just about all systems. Font is scalable so you can enlarge print and read it in very large size on your computer screen.

Kirk sighed and walked around the room. It was the strangest room he'd ever seen. There didn't seem to be a door anywhere. How did anyone get in? Did they beam in? Was it the sealed box with no visible entrance it seemed to be? That thought alone made his gut clench. Spending the following hour examining this luxurious cage, Kirk eventually realized that this was exactly what it was: luxurious and comfortable, but still a cage.
