"I'm sorry," Tim Speedle said softly, his voice full of regret but firm and final all the same. "I can't."

Horatio Caine stared at the younger man in stupefied shock. He had caught all the signals that had passed between them over the last few months - the looks constantly traded back and forth, the light, brushing little touches whenever they passed one another, more and more time spent in each other's company both off the job and on. Every one of those gestures had indicated an interest, an attraction and he had felt sure enough to make an offer to take things further. He had been more than confident that he wouldn't be turned down.

He had been wrong.

"Why?" he found himself asking. He had to know the reason; he couldn't have made that big of a mistake. Could he? "I thought that you..." He stopped just then, not knowing what else to say. Especially when he already had said too much.

"You weren't wrong, H," Speed said softly. He folded his arms across his chest, an uncomfortable look on his face. "I do... I am. Very much so." He paused. "But I've given it a lot of thought, us getting together, and I just can't." He shook his head. "I'm sorry if I led you on or anything. God knows I didn't mean to."

"No, you didn't," Horatio quickly said. And he hadn't. Not really. Just the signals, which weren't Speed's fault. He was the one who had read them all wrong.

But had he really? He said he was attracted to me, Horatio realized, thinking about Speed's exact words. He just said that he couldn't do anything about it? But why? I know he isn't seeing anyone else, so that can't be the reason. "It's because I'm your boss, isn't it?" he asked, hazarding a guess. "I'm your boss and we work together. You don't want to jeopardize that."

"That's partly it," Speed acknowledged with a nod. "But it's not the only reason. A big part of it is personal."

This gen CSI novel is based on the season five finale episode, Grave Danger, and centres around Nick Stokes.

Excerpt:

Dr. Kane put his pad down and held up a hand to stop Nick's questions.

"First things first. Let's deal with tomorrow. We'll leave the worrying about the job and your duties for another session."

Nick raised his head from the couch.

"One step at a time, right, Doc?"

"That's what I've been telling you all along. Nice to know that you've been listening."

Nick stood and crossed the room, wanting to get closer to the window. Wanting to be able to touch the glass. The knowledge that this thick piece of pane was the thing that kept him from falling seven stories down was a strange comfort. He needed to view the glass as a safe barrier, not like the glass that had held him captive.

"What's the worse-case scenario, Nick, with tomorrow? What is your biggest fear? Usually if you confront that head on, all others seem to pale in comparison."

Nick thought to himself as he touched the glass. Strange how he never noticed the complexities of it before. Never gave it the appreciation it deserved. So strong and yet so completely seamless. It had the ability to give you the feeling of being free, but Nick knew the other side of that equation. It can keep you trapped. Trapped like a -

Summary: Life without Timothy Speedle isn't much of a life for Horatio Caine. But his life is suddenly turned upside down when someone sends him a postcard in what appears to be Speed's handwriting. Is someone playing a cruel trick on Horatio? Or not?

Short Excerpt:

Unlocking the door, Horatio stepped inside, throwing his keys onto the nearest flat surface. Shrugging off his suit jacket, he hung it up on the coat rack by the door. Then, without turning on the lights, he made his way to the fireplace mantle and the one picture that was sitting there.

Picking it up, he caressed the wooden frame; he didn't need the light to see the image it contained, burned as it was on his heart and soul. It was a picture of him and Speed, sharing a long kiss under the mistletoe at Alexx's last Christmas party.

It seems so long ago now, he thought as the now familiar ache settled in his heart. The picture had been taken six months ago, with Alexx surprising them with it for their anniversary just two months after. They had been lovers for less than a year then, and yet never in his live had he felt so complete, so whole, than when he had been when he was with Speed.

But thanks to a stray bullet and a faulty firing pin, all that was gone.

"I miss you," Horatio whispered to the photo, a lone tear sliding down his cheek as he brushed a finger over the image of his lover. "So much, honey. It's been too much since you've been gone. God...Speed..."

Sagging onto the sofa, Horatio clutched the frame to his chest and let the tears he had been holding back all day come.
